Wanted something to replace my Atomic Browser which was a good browser. I paid $4.99 for the Perfect Browser which I think was a tad bit high but with a lot of good reviews I went ahead and purchased the app. Had problems importing bookmarks at first but that was corrected by an app update. My pet peeve; when saving bookmarks and the way it's displayed as alphabetical but it includes the sub-folders so I would need to waste time looking for the folder I want to save the bookmark to. I have emailed support about it but still waiting for an update. I also suggested a one button clear all cache, history & cookies like my Atomic browser and have not received a reply from support. Have since reverted back to my Atomic browser until Perfect Browser hopefully updates its app with the features which makes it easier to use. FUCK PERFECT WEB BROWSER and the pieces of shit who made it!

This browser is almost what iOS needs. It identifies itself like a desktop browser, and it runs any page you throw at it, just as the page is supposed to look. Until something... Anything goes wrong. Then it will crash. Atomic Lite will crash without any apparent cause, halfway through a video, or long after a page has loaded, or as a page is loading. It doesn't seem to matter. It just crashes apparently at random. This would be my first choice for browsers if it could stay open for more than 15 minutes at a time. And with that I say FUCK ATOMIC LITE! Stanford’s and Cal’s reality in the ACC was marked by another milestone Thursday.
Both schools announced their women’s basketball opponents and schedule format for their first two ACC seasons, which will begin in 2024-25. The two schools will move from the Pac-12 to the ACC on July 1.
Each ACC school will play an 18-game conference schedule that includes eight home games and eight road games with 16 of the teams, and each will be assigned one travel partner with which they play each other at home and on the road.
Stanford and Cal will be travel partners and see each other twice a season. What being a traveling partner actually entails is unclear; on Thursday, spokespeople at both schools did not know what that would look like as far as charters or other travel details. SMU, which also is entering the ACC in July, will be paired with Pittsburgh as a travel partner.

Now you have to speed run the game AND a level you have never even seen and send in your best run post dated within a 1 day of the code being sent out.
Yeah, it's one of THOSE kinds of deals. It's kind of like those silly quizzes you would occasionally see in EGM or GamePro with 30 questions that require a $10 entry fee each time and you have to complete 5 of them to MAYBE get a $2000 entertainment center (which I never heard of anyone ever winning one of those. Maybe someone can link me an AMA of someone that did.)
This may be a lesser example, but it should infuriate anyone. They are selling you a bad game to sell you a bad contest so they can make even more money off entry fees and the 1-900 number.

"I love to play the game... But I think it falls apart at the end...
I've never understood why the console versions of these games force you to complete a second-quest in order to get the good ending. With the arcade cabinets, it makes sense considering that the longer you play, the more quarters you have to spend - maximizing profits. But at home, on a console, it's a frustrating waste of time. Not to mention, Super Ghouls and Ghosts is the first game released exclusively for an at-home console with no Arcade equivalent. Some people say it's because they want to lengthen the gaming experience, but considering how difficult the game can be and how often one can be stuck at one section for hours on end, I think that 6 levels and a final boss is plenty of content. And a second quest is just unnecessary. Sure it's keeping with the "traditions" of the franchise, but those traditions don't make sense for the console game...
Speaking of such...The idea that the game requires a Second Run specifically to get a special weapon, which apparently is the only key to defeating the final boss... We really don't need another full playthrough just to get this one weapon, when the game should literally just give it to us after we beat Nebiroth... And as such...keeping with tradition; the special weapon fucking SUCKS... The Makaimura series has always had problems with whatever special weapon is required for the last boss - the Shield from Ghosts 'n Goblins, the Psycho Cannon from Ghouls and Ghosts, etc. etc... And why does it do this? Because the developers want the final bosses to be as challenging as possible, so they intentionally give you a weapon that is weaker than the others, to make it more interesting...
That being said...I am of the opinion that the Goddess' Bracelet - the Special Weapon Dejour for the game - is without a doubt the worst special weapon in the entire franchise. Why? Because it has no Super-Charge attack. Every other weapon in the game can be super-charged while wearing the Golden Armor to do a Super Magical attack; and when the attack is over, Arthur is given a few frames of invincibility so the player isn't vulnerable after the animation. The Bracelet doesn't have that...It's only one attack and will be as it is, regardless of armor or not...This is BS considering that, you not only need the Bracelet to fight Sardius, in order to even get to him, you have to have it equipped when you fight Astaroth AND Nebiroth...and that fight becomes tedious when you can kill BOTH of them in mere seconds with three simple Dragon-Force Magic attacks with the Dagger Equipped. It becomes so frustrating when you realize the game is literally handicapping you, by making you fight with an inferior weapon. But you might be saying - the Psycho-Cannon from Ghouls and Ghosts didn't charge for a super-attack either, so what makes the Goddess' Bracelet worse? Simple...because of the nature of how "Super" Ghouls 'n Ghosts compares to its counterpart...it cannot fire up. In Arcade Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Capcom made the brilliant addition of allowing the player to shoot vertically, either upwards or downwards depending on the situation. But for the SNES? They took that way - Arthur can only shoot directly forward in front of him. (but at least he has a double-jump.)
This is why the Goddess' Bracelet is objectively the worst Special Weapon. Because had you been able to shoot upwards at Sardius' face on the ride up with his platforms, you'd be able to hit him 5 to 7 times total, instead of the 2-4 if you're lucky. Plus, Sardius takes way too many hits to be justified; at some point, it just gets tedious and you want to yell, "JUST DIE ALREADY!" at the screen. The last time I fought him, I counted a total of 17 hits, and he still wasn't dead. Comparatively speaking, in Ghouls 'n Ghosts, I defeated Lucifer before I even realized it.
TL;DR Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a really great, really fun, and really addicting game. It's a great way to waste a few hours if you can spare them. However, getting the True Ending after playing a second time and having to be stuck with an inferior "super" weapon, just isn't worth it. If you're emulating it; save your progress right as the Sardius fight begins. Then play through the game's campaign once, and then load the state as soon as Prin-Prin starts talking. It's not worth doing it all twice, for little-to-no reward."
Amen! The stupidity of removing the ability to throw your weapons up and down is basically the reason why idiot Capcom didn't make a sequel (sold poorly once the negative word of mouth came in) until the PSP era!
The crossbow doesn't make up for the lack of throwing weapons up and down. Especially when it has the worst magic spell in that game (uncovers hidden treasure chests...which is useless against bosses). No wonder the majority calls the knives the best weapon thanks to that killer flame dragon spell.
Ghouls 'n Ghosts was already a difficult game itself, but at least there were less stages that was also shorter too compared to Super. And in addition to throwing your weapons vertically, the so called "super weapon," the Psycho Cannon can fire two shots. The Goddess Bracelet only fires ONE shot at a time!
At least you don't have to acquire the so called "super weapons" right away, as you just have to wait till the second to last stage in these games before being forced to use them.
The second loop wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for "bad jumping" controls, two hits before death, and checkpoints (rather than respawn where you died).
Obviously, Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins for the PSP is the best one, now that King Arthur can take more hits before losing a life. But Ghouls 'n Ghosts for the Genesis is not bad too if you can handle the brutal difficulty, and if not, there is a cheat code that makes Arthur near invincible (something that Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts lacks).
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is the perfect example of what happens when you target the minority (hardcore fanatics that enjoys playing near impossible games like Wizardry 4: The Return of Werdna) instead of the majority (casuals with a life).

Now That's What I Call Music! 15 Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine Whereas previous installments of the Now That's What I Call Music series attempted to recap the previous six months of the American pop charts, the 15th volume is a snapshot of the current pop scene as of March 23, 2004, containing several singles that were still climbing the charts, or at least still gaining significant radio play. More than ever, the series' attempt at diversity doesn't sit well together, partially because the different styles are grouped together -- the record starts with a pair of pop tunes before delving into hardcore rap, which leads to a stretch of dance and urban before swinging toward adult pop, which is abruptly interrupted with a batch of hard rock before it all wraps up with a Five for Fighting song that hardly burned up the charts. None of this segues well together, which only points out that this is by far one of the weaker collections in the NOW series. There's a handful of good singles scattered throughout the record -- No Doubt's "It's My Life" is a fine new wave cover, Sheryl Crow's "The First Cut Is the Deepest" is fine, Norah Jones' "Sunrise" is pleasant, Sarah Connor's "Bounce" is infectious, and Britney Spears' "Toxic" is deliriously catchy, one of her best singles -- but most of this is generic at best and at worst, as on Nick Cannon's awful "Gigolo," supremely irritating. As always, the NOW series is good at capturing one moment in time, but based on this collection, it'd be better to forget the first few months of this year. As Ruben Studdard would say, "Sorry 2004"!

"Some fans of jazz artist Diana Krall apparently don’t like jazz.
I’ve come to that conclusion based on years of hearing people grumble at her concerts about the long improvisational instrumental portions, a sentiment that has been underscored by the emails I’ve received from disappointed concert-goers who disagree with my typically positive assessment of Krall’s live performances.
In all of the above cases, they seem to want a stronger focus on the vocals, which is quite understandable given how great Krall is on the microphone. And they want her to sing in a more straightforward singer-songwriter/pop fashion, instead of using her voice as a jazz instrument.
Yet, that’s not who Krall is. She’s a jazz artist. And she puts on jazz shows — which certainly included the one she delivered on Friday night at the beautiful Mountain Winery in Saratoga.
During her concerts, vocals are just a part of the attraction. Jazz cats get this and appreciate the lengthy spotlights given to Krall’s bandmates — bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton and guitarist Anthony Wilson — all of whom are phenomenal players with so much to say on their instruments that is absolutely worth hearing.
Diana Krall is not Norah Jones or some other Starbucks-friendly crooner. But apparently not all concertgoers realized this before heading off to the show.
Instead, we witnessed hundreds of fans making very early exits during Krall’s Mountain Winery gig. It was so bad that the lower bowl, which was packed at the start of the show, was basically half-empty during the later stages of the vocalist-pianist’s roughly 100-minute performance.
Of course, the chilly weather certainly could have factored in. Yet, that’s nothing new for this venue — especially this early in its season — and most people seemed to be veteran Mountain Winery attendees who had dressed properly for the occasion. (The few apparent novices, however, were miserable in their T-shirts and shorts.)
A few people leaving early at the Mountain Winery is normal, but in my decades of attending shows here I’ve never seen an exodus so dramatic and pronounced as what occurred on Friday.
Krall, who did not address the matter or make any visible reaction to it, deserved better. And, of course, she’ll get it once she cashes the sizable check for playing the show. So, we’ll save the tears.
But there was nothing in the performance that gave people an obvious reason to leave. Krall and company sounded great throughout the night as they once again mined the Great American Songbook in glorious ways.
The show got off to a strong start with the Lerner-and-Loewe show tune “Almost Like Being in Love,” which was written for the 1947 musical “Brigadoon” and was wonderfully sung in the 1954 film version by Gene Kelly. Here, Krall’s dreamy vocals mixed with Wilson’s robust guitar work for another standout version.
From there, this first-class quartet moved into “All or Nothing at All,” which many known from the smash Frank Sinatra version of 1939 but, for our money, found its greatest interpretation on the Billie Holiday album of the same name in 1958. Krall’s take, we should add, is also outstanding — and it’s all her own, with a vibe that doesn’t really mimic either the Sinatra or Holiday versions.
As the evening progressed, Krall continued to be a very generous bandleader, providing space for a luxurious run from bassist Clayton on “Let’s Fall in Love” (written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler for the 1933 film of the same name), and a rip-roaring guitar part by Wilson and a big drum showcase for Hamilton on a fast-paced “Devil May Care,” which was penned by Bob Dorough (who was known for, among other things, his work on “Schoolhouse Rock” educational TV song series).
Krall slowed things down for a low, sultry and impactful version of Russ Columbo’s signature romantic tune, “You Call It Madness, But I Call It Love,” which the vocalist-pianist — and millions of others — know from the Nat King Cole Trio recording. She stayed with the same vibe for Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” which — in yet of another sign of how many outstanding compositions came out of the ’30s and ”40s — lost the Academy Award for best original song to “The Way You Look Tonight” in 1936. (“Pennies From Heaven” was also nominated that same year.)
The troupe continued through winning versions of “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” (which, thankfully, was the 1933 standard rather than the Green Day tune) and “The Look of Love” (the Burt Bacharach composition, although I’d also would’ve loved to hear Krall cover the ABC number of the same name).
Yet, the crowd response, for the most part, didn’t match the band’s efforts. By the time Krall was driving into “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66,” hundreds of fans were driving out of the parking lot. The mass exit happened right before the star’s eyes, which had to be, at the very least, distracting and probably quite disheartening as well.
Krall told the crowd early in the night that she has long held onto an setlist from a previous Mountain Winery show as a kind of a keepsake. The guess here is that she won’t recall Friday’s show remember quite so fondly."
They probably left when they realized that Rage Against The Machine wasn't going to be there. Jim Harrington, you whiny shit!
PS - And yes, Diana Krall is basically "opening act" material for Rage Against The Machine.
Hornets on the Move: Sacramento State leaves Big Sky for Big West, football future remains uncertain.
"This move reflects the passion and perseverance of our entire university community," Sacramento State President Luke Wood said in a statement.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State's sports teams are moving to the Big West Conference, the university announced Wednesday morning.
The move does not include football, which will remain in the Big Sky Conference. This comes as the university has been attempting to join the Pac-12 or other major conferences.
The Big West, mainly of California-based schools such as UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, and UC Irvine, does not sponsor football.
The school will become a full member in the 2026-2027 academic year. Men's soccer and beach volleyball have already been competing in the Big West.
"This move reflects the passion and perseverance of our entire university community," Sacramento State President Dr. Luke Wood said in a statement. "We believe deeply in the power of athletics to transform lives and are proud to align ourselves with a conference that shares our core values of excellence, integrity and student-centered growth."
Sac State’s football future is in limbo, even as other programs prepare for a new competitive chapter. Cross-town rival UC Davis is moving to the Mountain West Conference for most sports but will also remain in the Big Sky Conference for football.
Wood told ABC10 that he remains “confident” ahead of a crucial NCAA meeting to decide whether the Hornets will be allowed to move up to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest tier in college football.
In September, Sacramento State unveiled plans for a 25,000-seat football and multi-sport stadium, signaling the university’s long-term commitment to elevating its athletic profile.
The facility is being designed by Populus, an architecture firm behind high-profile projects such as Yankee Stadium, Target Field in Minneapolis, and Colorado State’s Canvas Stadium.
The new stadium will replace Hornet Stadium, which was built in 1969 and has a capacity of approximately 21,000.
That venue has hosted multiple events over the years, including Olympic Trials and NCAA track championships, but lacks the amenities expected of a modern FBS facility. Still, officials have said the project is key to recruiting top-tier athletes and meeting FBS facility requirements.

I paid $4.99 for the Perfect Browser which I think was a tad bit high but with a lot of good reviews I went ahead and purchased the app. Had problems importing bookmarks at first but that was corrected by an app update. My pet peeve; when saving bookmarks and the way it's displayed as alphabetical but it includes the sub-folders so I would need to waste time looking for the folder I want to save the bookmark to. I have emailed support about it but still waiting for an update. I also suggested a one button clear all cache, history & cookies like my Atomic browser and have not received a reply from support. Have since reverted back to my Atomic browser until Perfect Browser hopefully updates its app with the features which makes it easier to use. FUCK PERFECT WEB BROWSER and the pieces of shit who made it!

This browser is almost what iOS needs. It identifies itself like a desktop browser, and it runs any page you throw at it, just as the page is supposed to look. Until something... Anything goes wrong. Then it will crash. Atomic Lite will crash without any apparent cause, halfway through a video, or long after a page has loaded, or as a page is loading. It doesn't seem to matter. It just crashes apparently at random. This would be my first choice for browsers if it could stay open for more than 15 minutes at a time. And with that I say FUCK ATOMIC LITE! And FUCK THE DIPSHITS WHO MADE THIS SHITTY BROWSER! I will enjoy the day when those dipshits get their throats slit by angry users that they've screwed over!

A little defensive aren't we? I have to agree with that guy. Look, I love Bananarama as much as the next guy, but they aren't exactly the best choice for a porno. It especially doesn't help that you used an inferior version of the far more superior Shocking Blue song. Most Bananarama covers ranged from average (which their version of the Shocking Blue song is) to complete garbage (Careless Whisper and Long Train Running anyone)! ReplyDeleteBoth schools announced their women’s basketball opponents and schedule format for their first two ACC seasons, which will begin in 2024-25. The two schools will move from the Pac-12 to the ACC on July 1.
Each ACC school will play an 18-game conference schedule that includes eight home games and eight road games with 16 of the teams, and each will be assigned one travel partner with which they play each other at home and on the road.
Stanford and Cal will be travel partners and see each other twice a season. What being a traveling partner actually entails is unclear; on Thursday, spokespeople at both schools did not know what that would look like as far as charters or other travel details. SMU, which also is entering the ACC in July, will be paired with Pittsburgh as a travel partner.
In 2024-25, Stanford and Cal will each host Pittsburgh, Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Syracuse, and Boston College. They each will travel to Duke, Clemson, Wake Forest, SMU, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Louisville, and Notre Dame.

If I could quantify everything this game represents in just a few words it would be "90's Marketing gone wrong". I can understand companies making contests, Nintendo did it frequently in the late 80s and early 90s, but ASC? I never even heard of a game they made and judging from this game I can reason why.
The game is a directionless, confusing, poorly tossed together trainwreck of a game. Imagine if a company sold you a crappier version of McKids for $60, then asked you to call a 1-900 number (another $5 easily) to register and give them your address so they can send you a date when a special code would be given.
The code in question was shown a couple times very briefly on MTV and if you didn't have cable, well, you got fucked son. Welcome to how the economy works. THEN you have to hope you have a properly working VCR (it's a ancient recording device for you kiddies), a tape to record with and have the sense not to put the recording on standard play.
Now you have to speed run the game AND a level you have never even seen and send in your best run post dated within a 1 day of the code being sent out.
Yeah, it's one of THOSE kinds of deals. It's kind of like those silly quizzes you would occasionally see in EGM or GamePro with 30 questions that require a $10 entry fee each time and you have to complete 5 of them to MAYBE get a $2000 entertainment center (which I never heard of anyone ever winning one of those. Maybe someone can link me an AMA of someone that did.)
This may be a lesser example, but it should infuriate anyone. They are selling you a bad game to sell you a bad contest so they can make even more money off entry fees and the 1-900 number.

I've never understood why the console versions of these games force you to complete a second-quest in order to get the good ending. With the arcade cabinets, it makes sense considering that the longer you play, the more quarters you have to spend - maximizing profits. But at home, on a console, it's a frustrating waste of time. Not to mention, Super Ghouls and Ghosts is the first game released exclusively for an at-home console with no Arcade equivalent.
Some people say it's because they want to lengthen the gaming experience, but considering how difficult the game can be and how often one can be stuck at one section for hours on end, I think that 6 levels and a final boss is plenty of content. And a second quest is just unnecessary. Sure it's keeping with the "traditions" of the franchise, but those traditions don't make sense for the console game...
Speaking of such...The idea that the game requires a Second Run specifically to get a special weapon, which apparently is the only key to defeating the final boss...
We really don't need another full playthrough just to get this one weapon, when the game should literally just give it to us after we beat Nebiroth...
And as such...keeping with tradition; the special weapon fucking SUCKS...
The Makaimura series has always had problems with whatever special weapon is required for the last boss - the Shield from Ghosts 'n Goblins, the Psycho Cannon from Ghouls and Ghosts, etc. etc...
And why does it do this? Because the developers want the final bosses to be as challenging as possible, so they intentionally give you a weapon that is weaker than the others, to make it more interesting...
That being said...I am of the opinion that the Goddess' Bracelet - the Special Weapon Dejour for the game - is without a doubt the worst special weapon in the entire franchise. Why?
Because it has no Super-Charge attack. Every other weapon in the game can be super-charged while wearing the Golden Armor to do a Super Magical attack; and when the attack is over, Arthur is given a few frames of invincibility so the player isn't vulnerable after the animation.
The Bracelet doesn't have that...It's only one attack and will be as it is, regardless of armor or not...This is BS considering that, you not only need the Bracelet to fight Sardius, in order to even get to him, you have to have it equipped when you fight Astaroth AND Nebiroth...and that fight becomes tedious when you can kill BOTH of them in mere seconds with three simple Dragon-Force Magic attacks with the Dagger Equipped. It becomes so frustrating when you realize the game is literally handicapping you, by making you fight with an inferior weapon.
But you might be saying - the Psycho-Cannon from Ghouls and Ghosts didn't charge for a super-attack either, so what makes the Goddess' Bracelet worse? Simple...because of the nature of how "Super" Ghouls 'n Ghosts compares to its counterpart...it cannot fire up. In Arcade Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Capcom made the brilliant addition of allowing the player to shoot vertically, either upwards or downwards depending on the situation. But for the SNES? They took that way - Arthur can only shoot directly forward in front of him. (but at least he has a double-jump.)
This is why the Goddess' Bracelet is objectively the worst Special Weapon. Because had you been able to shoot upwards at Sardius' face on the ride up with his platforms, you'd be able to hit him 5 to 7 times total, instead of the 2-4 if you're lucky.
ReplyDeletePlus, Sardius takes way too many hits to be justified; at some point, it just gets tedious and you want to yell, "JUST DIE ALREADY!" at the screen. The last time I fought him, I counted a total of 17 hits, and he still wasn't dead. Comparatively speaking, in Ghouls 'n Ghosts, I defeated Lucifer before I even realized it.
TL;DR
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a really great, really fun, and really addicting game. It's a great way to waste a few hours if you can spare them. However, getting the True Ending after playing a second time and having to be stuck with an inferior "super" weapon, just isn't worth it.
If you're emulating it; save your progress right as the Sardius fight begins. Then play through the game's campaign once, and then load the state as soon as Prin-Prin starts talking. It's not worth doing it all twice, for little-to-no reward."
Amen! The stupidity of removing the ability to throw your weapons up and down is basically the reason why idiot Capcom didn't make a sequel (sold poorly once the negative word of mouth came in) until the PSP era!
The crossbow doesn't make up for the lack of throwing weapons up and down. Especially when it has the worst magic spell in that game (uncovers hidden treasure chests...which is useless against bosses). No wonder the majority calls the knives the best weapon thanks to that killer flame dragon spell.
Ghouls 'n Ghosts was already a difficult game itself, but at least there were less stages that was also shorter too compared to Super. And in addition to throwing your weapons vertically, the so called "super weapon," the Psycho Cannon can fire two shots. The Goddess Bracelet only fires ONE shot at a time!
At least you don't have to acquire the so called "super weapons" right away, as you just have to wait till the second to last stage in these games before being forced to use them.
The second loop wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for "bad jumping" controls, two hits before death, and checkpoints (rather than respawn where you died).
Obviously, Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins for the PSP is the best one, now that King Arthur can take more hits before losing a life. But Ghouls 'n Ghosts for the Genesis is not bad too if you can handle the brutal difficulty, and if not, there is a cheat code that makes Arthur near invincible (something that Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts lacks).
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is the perfect example of what happens when you target the minority (hardcore fanatics that enjoys playing near impossible games like Wizardry 4: The Return of Werdna) instead of the majority (casuals with a life).
"With the arcade cabinets, it makes sense considering that the longer you play, the more quarters you have to spend - maximizing profits."

ReplyDeleteWhereas previous installments of the Now That's What I Call Music series attempted to recap the previous six months of the American pop charts, the 15th volume is a snapshot of the current pop scene as of March 23, 2004, containing several singles that were still climbing the charts, or at least still gaining significant radio play. More than ever, the series' attempt at diversity doesn't sit well together, partially because the different styles are grouped together -- the record starts with a pair of pop tunes before delving into hardcore rap, which leads to a stretch of dance and urban before swinging toward adult pop, which is abruptly interrupted with a batch of hard rock before it all wraps up with a Five for Fighting song that hardly burned up the charts. None of this segues well together, which only points out that this is by far one of the weaker collections in the NOW series. There's a handful of good singles scattered throughout the record -- No Doubt's "It's My Life" is a fine new wave cover, Sheryl Crow's "The First Cut Is the Deepest" is fine, Norah Jones' "Sunrise" is pleasant, Sarah Connor's "Bounce" is infectious, and Britney Spears' "Toxic" is deliriously catchy, one of her best singles -- but most of this is generic at best and at worst, as on Nick Cannon's awful "Gigolo," supremely irritating. As always, the NOW series is good at capturing one moment in time, but based on this collection, it'd be better to forget the first few months of this year. As Ruben Studdard would say, "Sorry 2004"!

"Some fans of jazz artist Diana Krall apparently don’t like jazz.
I’ve come to that conclusion based on years of hearing people grumble at her concerts about the long improvisational instrumental portions, a sentiment that has been underscored by the emails I’ve received from disappointed concert-goers who disagree with my typically positive assessment of Krall’s live performances.
In all of the above cases, they seem to want a stronger focus on the vocals, which is quite understandable given how great Krall is on the microphone. And they want her to sing in a more straightforward singer-songwriter/pop fashion, instead of using her voice as a jazz instrument.
Yet, that’s not who Krall is. She’s a jazz artist. And she puts on jazz shows — which certainly included the one she delivered on Friday night at the beautiful Mountain Winery in Saratoga.
During her concerts, vocals are just a part of the attraction. Jazz cats get this and appreciate the lengthy spotlights given to Krall’s bandmates — bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton and guitarist Anthony Wilson — all of whom are phenomenal players with so much to say on their instruments that is absolutely worth hearing.
Diana Krall is not Norah Jones or some other Starbucks-friendly crooner. But apparently not all concertgoers realized this before heading off to the show.
Instead, we witnessed hundreds of fans making very early exits during Krall’s Mountain Winery gig. It was so bad that the lower bowl, which was packed at the start of the show, was basically half-empty during the later stages of the vocalist-pianist’s roughly 100-minute performance.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the chilly weather certainly could have factored in. Yet, that’s nothing new for this venue — especially this early in its season — and most people seemed to be veteran Mountain Winery attendees who had dressed properly for the occasion. (The few apparent novices, however, were miserable in their T-shirts and shorts.)
A few people leaving early at the Mountain Winery is normal, but in my decades of attending shows here I’ve never seen an exodus so dramatic and pronounced as what occurred on Friday.
Krall, who did not address the matter or make any visible reaction to it, deserved better. And, of course, she’ll get it once she cashes the sizable check for playing the show. So, we’ll save the tears.
But there was nothing in the performance that gave people an obvious reason to leave. Krall and company sounded great throughout the night as they once again mined the Great American Songbook in glorious ways.
The show got off to a strong start with the Lerner-and-Loewe show tune “Almost Like Being in Love,” which was written for the 1947 musical “Brigadoon” and was wonderfully sung in the 1954 film version by Gene Kelly. Here, Krall’s dreamy vocals mixed with Wilson’s robust guitar work for another standout version.
From there, this first-class quartet moved into “All or Nothing at All,” which many known from the smash Frank Sinatra version of 1939 but, for our money, found its greatest interpretation on the Billie Holiday album of the same name in 1958. Krall’s take, we should add, is also outstanding — and it’s all her own, with a vibe that doesn’t really mimic either the Sinatra or Holiday versions.
As the evening progressed, Krall continued to be a very generous bandleader, providing space for a luxurious run from bassist Clayton on “Let’s Fall in Love” (written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler for the 1933 film of the same name), and a rip-roaring guitar part by Wilson and a big drum showcase for Hamilton on a fast-paced “Devil May Care,” which was penned by Bob Dorough (who was known for, among other things, his work on “Schoolhouse Rock” educational TV song series).
ReplyDeleteKrall slowed things down for a low, sultry and impactful version of Russ Columbo’s signature romantic tune, “You Call It Madness, But I Call It Love,” which the vocalist-pianist — and millions of others — know from the Nat King Cole Trio recording. She stayed with the same vibe for Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” which — in yet of another sign of how many outstanding compositions came out of the ’30s and ”40s — lost the Academy Award for best original song to “The Way You Look Tonight” in 1936. (“Pennies From Heaven” was also nominated that same year.)
The troupe continued through winning versions of “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” (which, thankfully, was the 1933 standard rather than the Green Day tune) and “The Look of Love” (the Burt Bacharach composition, although I’d also would’ve loved to hear Krall cover the ABC number of the same name).
Yet, the crowd response, for the most part, didn’t match the band’s efforts. By the time Krall was driving into “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66,” hundreds of fans were driving out of the parking lot. The mass exit happened right before the star’s eyes, which had to be, at the very least, distracting and probably quite disheartening as well.
Krall told the crowd early in the night that she has long held onto an setlist from a previous Mountain Winery show as a kind of a keepsake. The guess here is that she won’t recall Friday’s show remember quite so fondly."
They probably left when they realized that Rage Against The Machine wasn't going to be there. Jim Harrington, you whiny shit!

Hornets on the Move: Sacramento State leaves Big Sky for Big West, football future remains uncertain.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State's sports teams are moving to the Big West Conference, the university announced Wednesday morning.
The move does not include football, which will remain in the Big Sky Conference. This comes as the university has been attempting to join the Pac-12 or other major conferences.
The Big West, mainly of California-based schools such as UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, and UC Irvine, does not sponsor football.
The school will become a full member in the 2026-2027 academic year. Men's soccer and beach volleyball have already been competing in the Big West.
"This move reflects the passion and perseverance of our entire university community," Sacramento State President Dr. Luke Wood said in a statement. "We believe deeply in the power of athletics to transform lives and are proud to align ourselves with a conference that shares our core values of excellence, integrity and student-centered growth."
Sac State’s football future is in limbo, even as other programs prepare for a new competitive chapter. Cross-town rival UC Davis is moving to the Mountain West Conference for most sports but will also remain in the Big Sky Conference for football.
Wood told ABC10 that he remains “confident” ahead of a crucial NCAA meeting to decide whether the Hornets will be allowed to move up to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest tier in college football.
In September, Sacramento State unveiled plans for a 25,000-seat football and multi-sport stadium, signaling the university’s long-term commitment to elevating its athletic profile.
The facility is being designed by Populus, an architecture firm behind high-profile projects such as Yankee Stadium, Target Field in Minneapolis, and Colorado State’s Canvas Stadium.
The new stadium will replace Hornet Stadium, which was built in 1969 and has a capacity of approximately 21,000.
That venue has hosted multiple events over the years, including Olympic Trials and NCAA track championships, but lacks the amenities expected of a modern FBS facility. Still, officials have said the project is key to recruiting top-tier athletes and meeting FBS facility requirements.
